About

The More Earth Will Fall Impact and Outreach tour was a UK-Brazil collaboration using film to create dialogue on social issues and support social action through filmmaking. The aim of the project was to create a dialogue between different sections of Brazilian society about current social issues relevant to life in an urban environment, and in particular to give a ‘voice’ to the marginalised communities in the favelas. This was achieved through a combination of targeted screenings of the documentary More Earth Will Fall and follow-up community participatory film making projects.

There were 23 screenings overall, with over 2000 audience members overall. The screenings took place in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro over a two-week period in each state. In each city a series of screenings of More Earth Will Fall were organised in appropriate venues, including favelas, universities and arts institutions. A diverse cross-section of Brazil’s community leaders, academics, policy-makers and members of the public participated in the post-screening debates. Each screening was followed by a panel and audience discussion with the aim of creating a dialogue between opinion-makers, policy-makers, grassroots community leaders and favela residents.

The filmmaking workshop took place in partnership with Cursinho Popular Martin Luther King, a grassroots activist organisation who run Saturday classes for teenagers in Ferraz de Vasconcelos to help in their preparation for the university exam. Ferraz is the fifth poorest neighbourhood in SP state. The More Earth Will Fall directors, Lee McKarkiel and Sam Liebmann, ran a two-week course with the students to create a film about an issue relevant to and chosen by them, to be used as part of their social change campaign.

"More Earth Will Fall shows the ordinary routine of a family living in this context in the largest favela in Rio. The film can be seenand discussed by people from different social backgrounds, any ethnicity or age, causing a big impact emotionally and waking us up to an urgent call to act!”
