To screen in Rocinha was always important for obvious reasons. Actually it is at the edge of Rocinha across the road, in a school where most of the students come from Rocinha. A class of teenagers and teachers. It was interesting because the reaction is so different to SP. In SP, people would invariably be in tears. In this screening, we saw hardly any emotion. And the students were quite quiet. It may have been the type of school compared with the type of schools in SP, where the students were quite confident. But also, was interesting that one girl asked if this kinds of things (referring to the shootout) still happen. She is from Rocinha! But she lives in a part less affected by the violence. But the teachers were very inspired by the film, and want to use it to show other classes. And some of the students after a while began to engage in the discussion. One of them said it is wrong that people come from afar and do this work to help the community. His teacher corrected him, saying it is a documentary, made for making people reflect, but that who will help is you. You can see her talking in the video below. Marcia Ferrera was there, from an NGO that Tatiana and I first worked at when we got to know Rocinha.
