The last screening was by Favela Providencia underneath a highway. We met at Central Station (see film with same name, very good!) and walked there. They put up a projector against a wall next to a mural of Marielle Franco, a black, gay congresswoman from a Rio favela who was assassinated last year. The organisers, including Fatinha who runs Cineclube, pinned the Rainbow flag up as a sign of resistence. One woman who was hanging around came to watch the film once it started. And they had popcorn. It was a surreal place to watch it. And the sound was competing with other booming music around the area. Afterwards, we spoke for hours. The organisers, who are very active, especially around LGBT rights, said when they watched it it was as it their life was one thing before watching it and another after. The debate turned to how they as Lesbians were dealing with the current situation. One woman from Mare who worked with Marielle Franco, said the issue is the Left is not communicating their argument. It was a surreal place to have the screening and a nice end.
